Volunteers Needed for Biometrics Enrolment
Publication date: 22/03/2004

The UK Passport Service (UKPS) is seeking 1,000 disabled people aged 18 or over to take part in a biometrics enrolment trial. The trial will test the registration and verification of facial recognition, iris and fingerprint image biometrics.

The results from the trial will help inform the Government's plans to introduce biometrics as a unique method of identification. Chief Executive of the UKPS, Bernard Herdan, explains: "The biometrics trial is an important stepping stone in developing the use of biometrics to enhance the security features of passports. Biometrics are an essential element in the UKPS drive to strengthen identity authentication and reduce identity fraud and related crimes. We are holding this trial to help us understand how the enrolment of biometrics can work for our customers, especially those who may have difficulties in enrolment."

It is possible to take part in the trial between February and July 2004. There are four fixed locations in London, Leicester, Newcastle and Glasgow. In addition, the UKPS is employing mobile and portable units to cover other parts of the country. Participation should take no more than half an hour of your time.

The recruitment of participants is being managed by MORI, an independent market research company, to ensure the results of the trial reflect a representative sample of the UK population.

Please contact MORI to take part and help ensure that the needs of the disabled community are heard.

To register your interest in taking part, please contact Melanie Briere, MORI, on telephone number 020 73473023 or
