Legal Definition of Disability
Publication date: 11/ 10/ 2006
The Disability Rights Commission has recommended that the government change the legal definition of disability, in order to allow more disabled people to make discrimination claims. The DRC claim that the definition of disability within the Disability Discrimination Act should include everyone who has, or is perceived to have an impairment. This recommendation follows a consultation in which 4 out of 5 respondents called for a change. The change, if it came, would then include impairments that affected people for periods of less than 12 months at a time (eg depression).
